When it comes to dungeon crawlers, many gamers cut their teeth on Descent (or Descent 2nd Edition). We've found this to be quite affordable when purchasing from a company called Litko. Descent: Legends of the Dark is a fully app integrated board game that really impressed us. For most of the miniatures that we modify, we like to replace the bases they are shipped on with clear acrylic bases.
